This annotated bird list includes 382 species known to have occurred in Haida Gwaii and surrounding waters. This list contains 51 subspecies, 83 breeding species, 6 suspected breeding species, 2 introduced species, 2 extirpated species, 7 hypothetical species. The names of the species, subspecies and classification follow the order presented in The American Ornithologist’s Union Checklist of North American Birds, 65th Supplement, 2024 (Chesser et al. 2024). This list covers all the islands in the Haida Gwaii Archipelago with the boundary extending out the border with Alaska in Dixon Entrance in the north, the middle point of Hecate Strait to the east, to about 50-100 km south into Queen Charlotte Sound, and 200 km offshore on the west side of the islands. Many of the names listed were recorded when there were only English names commonly known. Now since truth and reconciliation, we have tried to incorporate as many Haida names as possible to be more inclusive and be respectful. It is our hope that by using this list the knowledge and understanding of the diversity of birds found on Haida Gwaii will greatly increase in the future.
