Western Salish Sea Rare Bird List

This is a list of all known, published, and unpublished records of casual and accidental species that have been reported in the Western Salish Sea Checklist Area. The checklist boundary starts from Becher Bay in East Sooke Park and runs up the west coast including Jordan River, Port Renfrew, and the West Coast Trail to the village of Bamfield, extending as far west as the Canada – US Border. The boundary also extends north of Bamfield to include the Broken Islands, and offshore to include Barkley Canyon. The boundary follows Loudon Channel east around the Broken Island Group, then up Imperial Eagle Channel and Alberni Inlet to Coleman Creek. From Coleman Creek the boundary heads in a southeast direction following the mountain Tops [Townicut Mt., Mt. Modeste, Mt. Todd, Survey Mt. to Empress Mt.] that make up the Western Salish Sea Drainage Basin. From here the boundary extends due south, including Sooke, using the Sooke / Metchosin boundary as the checklist boundary, following this line back down to Becher Bay and extending as far out as the Canada – US Border. To date there have been 403 species recorded in the Western Salish Sea Checklist area, including 117 breeding species, 153 species seen less than once a year, 6 introduced species and 2 extirpated species. This a general list and will be added to throughout the future as more information becomes available.
